About the position

The Senior Underwriter for Worker's Compensation at Specialty Program Group is a pivotal role focused on developing, managing, and growing a profitable book of workers' compensation insurance policies. This position is fully remote and requires the successful candidate to work closely with independent agents and specialty producers. The primary responsibilities include generating new sales, renewing existing policies, and creating new territories, products, and distribution relationships. The Senior Underwriter will solicit new agents, review and analyze insurance applications, and determine the best fit for both simple and complex workers' compensation cases. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with strong mathematical aptitude, analytical skills, and sales tenacity are essential for success in this role. The Senior Underwriter will also be responsible for developing and managing a book of renewal business and agency relationships, consistently achieving aggressive growth, quality, and profitability goals. Monitoring producer activity through submission reports and claims reports is crucial, as is reviewing accounts for proper classification and adherence to underwriting guidelines. The role involves preparing and maintaining legal underwriting files, managing risk control survey orders, and analyzing accounts to determine exposure and pricing. The candidate will need to listen comprehensively to distributors and policyholders, interpret their questions, and respond effectively. Additionally, the Senior Underwriter will conduct internal self-audits, provide ongoing management of the business for underwriting quality and service, and gather information to report on competitors. Training and mentoring Underwriting Assistants is also a key responsibility, along with participating in special committees and projects as necessary. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and maintaining strong carrier relations, ensuring that the company’s products and services are effectively communicated to producers and co-workers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a book of renewal business and agency relationships.
  • Generate new sales volumes through existing customers.
  • Establish and achieve aggressive growth, quality, and profitability goals.
  • Monitor producer activity through submission reports, monthly production, and claims reports.
  • Review accounts for proper classification and underwriting guidelines.
  • Prepare, maintain, and support the legal underwriting file on behalf of the Insurance Carrier.
  • Manage risk control survey orders and review necessary actions.
  • Analyze and document accounts to determine exposure, class-fit, and pricing.
  • Receive and service policy change requests from distributors.
  • Listen comprehensively to distributors and policyholders; interpret their questions and respond effectively.
  • Conduct internal self-audits.
  • Provide ongoing management of the business for underwriting quality and service.
  • Gather information and report on competitors.
  • Explain products and services of the company, our insurance carriers, and service providers.
  • Work with all internal departments and partners to resolve problems and maintain carrier relations.
  • Participate in underwriting audits with various partner carriers of MGA.
  • Train and mentor Underwriting Assistants.
  • Emphasize benefits of the Company to producers and co-workers.
  • Participate as necessary on special committees and projects.
  • Create and maintain periodic management reports.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree preferred, or equivalent experience and background including familiarity with rating organizations and insurance regulation.
  • 8+ years insurance experience with at least 5 years of workers' compensation background.
  • Working knowledge of Manual Rules and Classification procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of various state workers' compensation bureau rules and regulations.
  • Ability to function in a department producing multi-million dollars in premium annually; handling a large volume of accounts generating premiums of greater than $100,000.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent sales and communication demeanor.
  • Ability to organize work; perform with time constraints and be self-directed.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to adapt to significant change (procedures, processes, and techniques).
