About the position

The Senior Writer and Public Information Officer (PIO) at UCLA Samueli will collaborate with the Assistant Dean and Chief Marketing Communications Officer to develop and implement a strategic media relations plan. This role involves leveraging media relationships, creating compelling content, and enhancing the school's visibility through proactive public relations efforts. The PIO will be responsible for writing and editing various communications, managing social media channels, and supporting the school's strategic plan to attract diverse faculty and elevate its brand.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain media lists for UCLA Samueli.
• Identify and pitch newsworthy stories from research and school activities.
• Position faculty experts as sources for media outlets.
• Create a proactive program for generating positive media coverage.
• Write and edit electronic publications, web content, and social media posts.
• Assist in drafting speeches and talking points for school leadership.
• Coordinate social media postings to ensure consistent messaging.
• Implement a public relations program to raise visibility for the Dean and key leadership.

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of professional experience in journalism and media relations.
• Strong relationships with science and technology reporters.
• Superior writing and editing skills in AP Style.
• Experience in managing high-profile media events and inquiries.
• Ability to deliver media relations metrics to demonstrate ROI.
• Advanced knowledge of social media for brand building.
• Creative and critical thinking skills with the ability to prioritize effectively.
• Experience in high-pressure, deadline-driven environments.
