About the position

The Sensor Hardware Engineer at Kodiak will play a crucial role in developing advanced sensor and compute systems for autonomous trucking. This position focuses on optimizing camera performance and establishing embedded AI computing requirements, contributing to the company's mission of enhancing the efficiency and safety of long-haul trucking through autonomous technology.

Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally to define system requirements for autonomous driving compute.
  • Collaborate with external partners to specify and build embedded compute and sensor processing hardware.
  • Create requirements for sensor synchronization based on an understanding of sensor capabilities.
  • Research and evaluate the latest in embedded AI hardware and automotive camera technologies.
  • Develop and execute hands-on camera tests to help define vehicle architecture and improve perception performance.
  • Assist with sensor integration onto the vehicle and debugging issues that arise.
  • Manage relationships with contract manufacturers, suppliers, and external partners.
  • Work with the perception team to identify, understand, and solve sensor performance issues.

Requirements

  • Strong technical background with a BS or MS in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of experience in the automotive, aerospace, or related industry.
  • Experience with defining autonomous-driving compute systems and/or working within the camera optical and image processing pipeline is a strong plus.
  • Proven ability to build and iterate quickly through product development stages.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes for both low and high volume production.
  • Excellent communication skills with experience in writing clear, concise, and detailed documentation.
