About the position

Be part of a diverse team that pushes boundaries, developing custom silicon solutions that power the future of Google's direct-to-consumer products. You'll contribute to the innovation behind products loved by millions worldwide. Your expertise will shape the next generation of hardware experiences, delivering unparalleled performance, efficiency, and integration. Our team is part of Devices and Services (D&S) product area Technical Engineering and focuses on sensor design and integration into Google's hardware products (e.g., Pixel phones and watches). Our mission is to improve user experience through new sensing features that can be based on either new sensor technologies or new ways of using existing sensors. We follow these features from the early investigation/concept, through our New Technology Introduction process and finally through our New Product Introduction where we focus on system integration and mass production. Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our Devices & Services team combines the best of Google AI, Software, and Hardware to create radically helpful experiences for users. We research, design, and develop new technologies and hardware to make our user's interaction with computing faster, seamless, and more powerful. Whether finding new ways to capture and sense the world around us, advancing form factors, or improving interaction methods, the Devices & Services team is making people's lives better through technology.

Responsibilities

  • Work with cross-functional teams (i.e., Product Design, Industrial Design, Test Engineering) on system integration requirements.
  • Review design options, identify down-selection criteria and methods and drive design compromises to ensure successful system integration.
  • Engage with sensor/module vendors to assess and drive mass production readiness.
  • Collect and analyze build yield and sensor performance data and author reports and/or presentations to share progress and results with cross-functional teams and/or management.
  • Perform failure analysis, drive root cause understanding and validation and drive corrective actions. Author schematics, engineering requirements and specification documents, test specification and limits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience in the field of sensor design, integration or equivalent sensor related field, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP).
  • Experience shipping large volume consumer electronic systems.
  • Experience delivering two or more sensing modalities (i.e., electrical, optical, ultrasound, thermal, pressure).
  • Understanding of sensor physics.
  • Ability to build sensor models used to predict performances and understand sensitivities.
  • Ability to work and efficiently communicate in a fast-paced highly cross-functional environment.
