About the position

The City of Jonesboro is seeking a dynamic and grounded individual to serve as a Certified Police Sergeant. This supervisory law enforcement position is responsible for overseeing and managing the work of Patrol Officers in the Field Operations, Training, and Criminal Investigations Unit. The role involves a wide variety of administrative duties, including making daily work assignments in the absence of a Lieutenant, ensuring that assigned personnel are available for duty, and calling in replacements as authorized. The Sergeant will hold daily roll call sessions and conduct training sessions on laws or procedures. This position requires a high degree of accuracy in processing identification information, criminal backgrounds, and handling drugs, firearms, money, and other property brought into the department. Errors in these areas can have serious consequences and potential lawsuits against the city. The Sergeant enforces local, state, and federal laws, supervises police officers and other assigned staff, and coordinates shift changes. They are responsible for training personnel in proper work methods, conducting inspections, maintaining administrative records, and resolving minor complaints. The Sergeant also participates in investigating criminal law violations, obtaining evidence, preparing cases for filing charges, and testifying in court. They coordinate investigations with other agencies, review and evaluate reports, and assist with compiling crime analysis reports. Additionally, the Sergeant engages with the community through neighborhood watch programs, educating citizens on crime prevention, and maintaining law and order. The ideal candidate will be public service-focused, community-oriented, and partnership-based, with experience working with a diverse population of engaged residents and businesses. Responsibilities

  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws.
  • Supervises police officers and other assigned staff.
  • Coordinates shift changes and training personnel in proper work methods.
  • Conducts roll call, training, and inspections of weapons, vehicles, and uniforms.
  • Maintains administrative records and shift files.
  • Hears and resolves minor complaints and counsels subordinates.
  • Conducts annual evaluations of employee performance for Patrol Officers.
  • Participates in investigating criminal law violations within the city limits.
  • Obtains evidence and compiles information regarding crimes.
  • Prepares cases for filing of charges and testifies in court.
  • Coordinates investigations with other agencies and reviews reports.
  • Prepares necessary reports concerning shift activities and assists with crime analysis reports.
  • Answers inquiries from the public and handles complaints against officers.
  • Coordinates and supervises the training and development of subordinate police officers.
  • Participates in City neighborhood watch programs and educates citizens on crime prevention.
  • Maintains law and order and protects lives and property by supervising personnel.
  • Handles stressful situations according to department policy and provides backup for calls.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Certification required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a Certified Peace Officer.
  • GCIC Terminal Operator certification required.
  • RADAR or Laser and Intoxilyzer Certification preferred.
  • GA P.O.S.T. Supervision Levels I, II, III preferred.
  • Valid State of Georgia Driver's License required.
  • Must complete all three modules of supervision training within one (1) year of acquiring Sergeant rank.
