About the position

The Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development (ACOS/R D) at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, is a pivotal leadership role aimed at enhancing the quality of care for veterans through innovative research initiatives. This position is designed for a dedicated professional who is passionate about serving those who have served our country. The ACOS/R D will oversee a growing department that collaborates closely with esteemed institutions such as Duke University, Western Carolina University, and MAHEC, fostering an environment of learning and discovery. The role is entirely administrative, with no patient care responsibilities, allowing the incumbent to focus on managing research protocols and attending Research and Development (R&D) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) committees. The successful candidate will supervise a diverse team of approximately 20 personnel, including Program Specialists, Grants Specialists, Research Committee Coordinators, Study Coordinator Supervisors, Program Support Assistants, and Study Coordinators. This leadership position requires a strong background in research, particularly in writing grants and grant applications, as well as a commitment to advancing the mission of the VA to serve our nation's heroes. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4 PM, with no on-call requirements, ensuring a favorable work-life balance. The ACOS/R D will be involved in various types of research studies, including Industry Sponsored (14%), Cooperative Studies Program (43%), and Investigator-Initiated Studies (43%). This role is not remote, emphasizing the importance of being present in the integrated environment of the VA Asheville Healthcare System, which is dedicated to continuous improvement and exceptional care for veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise approximately 20 personnel including Program Specialist, Grants Specialist, Research Committee Coordinator, Study Coordinator Supervisor, Program Support Assistant, and 9 Study Coordinators.
  • Manage research protocols and ensure compliance with R&D and IRB committee requirements.
  • Oversee the writing and submission of grants and grant applications.
  • Collaborate with external institutions such as Duke, Western Carolina, and MAHEC on research initiatives.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of research studies, including industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies.

Requirements

  • MD, DO, Pharm D or PsyD required.
  • Board Eligible/Board Certified (BE/BC) in relevant field.
  • Experience with writing for grants and grant applications is preferred.
