About the position

The Breaking News Editor at SFGATE will lead the publication's timely coverage under the direction of the Deputy Managing Editor. This role involves understanding the responsibility of delivering news quickly and accurately to Bay Area residents. The editor will edit multiple stories daily, prioritize which stories to publish based on timeliness and audience opportunity, and work collaboratively with the Breaking News Reporter and other staff to cover various topics such as weather, traffic, and crime. The editor will also write stories and lead the newsroom during significant news events, such as earthquakes or wildfires. The working hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with potential for additional hours as news demands.

Responsibilities

  • Edit multiple stories daily and manage several assignments simultaneously.
  • Prioritize stories for publication based on timeliness and audience opportunity.
  • Collaborate with the Breaking News Reporter and other reporters to cover various topics.
  • Write stories and lead the newsroom during major news events.
  • Direct SFGATE's news coverage daily and make quick assignments to reporters.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in news writing and editing at a publication or in a digital media environment.
  • Deep knowledge of the Bay Area and understanding of local interests.
  • Passion for journalism and storytelling.
  • Familiarity with SFGATE's brand and voice.
  • Willingness to live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Benefits

  • Salary range between $90,000 and $95,000 for candidates hired in San Francisco.
