About the position

The Shelter Operations Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating the movement and population of animals within the shelter and its satellite facilities. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of animal services and the ability to coordinate various aspects of shelter operations, including intake, transfer, medical care, foster programs, and field units. The coordinator will oversee the shelter population, ensuring that accurate records are maintained and that the welfare of the animals is prioritized. This includes monitoring quality assurance reports, evaluating program effectiveness, and addressing any issues that arise with the shelter's operations. In addition to overseeing animal movement, the coordinator will facilitate problem-solving by leading regular meetings focused on animal management and training. They will design and implement departmental standards and procedures, ensuring compliance with animal shelter policies and guidelines. The role also involves assessing the training needs of staff and providing guidance on complex regulatory issues related to public health and animal welfare. The Shelter Operations Coordinator will assist in managing administrative functions, including budget planning and compliance with purchasing protocols. They will supervise assigned staff, providing training, performance appraisals, and maintaining a harmonious work environment. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and guide a team while ensuring that all operations align with the shelter's mission and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee shelter population and quality assurance, ensuring accurate animal inventory and compliance with policies.
  • Monitor and evaluate programs and processes for effectiveness, addressing any issues with responsible parties.
  • Run regular reports to identify trends in intake/disposition and shelter population, reporting findings to management.
  • Ensure proper animal housing and welfare, participating in daily rounds and managing data systems for animal locations and vaccinations.
  • Communicate with management to create and implement animal movement protocols based on health, behavior, and placement options.
  • Lead regularly scheduled animal movement and training meetings, designing and implementing department standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate with veterinarians for zoonotic disease surveillance and ensure compliance with animal quarantine and rabies control requirements.
  • Assist in planning and implementing the department's annual budget, managing assigned budgets and expenditures.
  • Supervise assigned staff, providing training, performance appraisals, and maintaining personnel standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher education.
  • Eight (8) years of animal services work experience.
  • Valid Texas Class 'C' Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
