About the position

The Shelter Operations Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the operations of the animal shelter, ensuring the effective management of animal population and movement through the shelter and its satellite facilities. This role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating various aspects of shelter operations, including intake, transfer, medical care, foster programs, and field units. The coordinator will work closely with all areas of the shelter to ensure that animals are housed properly and moved in a timely manner according to their health, behavior, and placement options. The position requires a strong focus on animal welfare and quality assurance, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations while maintaining accurate records of the shelter population. In addition to overseeing shelter operations, the Shelter Operations Coordinator will facilitate problem-solving and lead regular meetings to discuss animal movement and training. This includes designing and implementing departmental standards and procedures, monitoring movement records, and coordinating with veterinary staff to ensure the health and safety of the animals. The coordinator will also assist in managing administrative functions, ensuring compliance with health regulations, and providing guidance on complex regulatory issues. This role requires strong leadership skills, as the coordinator will supervise assigned staff, appraise performance, and provide training and development opportunities. The position is unclassified and requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with eight years of experience in animal services. A valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License is also required. The Shelter Operations Coordinator will play a crucial role in enhancing the welfare of animals in the shelter and ensuring that operations run smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate animal population and movement through the shelter and satellite facilities.
  • Oversee shelter population and quality assurance, ensuring maintenance of accurate and complete animal inventory.
  • Review quality assurance reports to ensure compliance with policies and monitor program effectiveness.
  • Identify records requiring follow-up and address them with responsible parties.
  • Run regular reports to identify intake/disposition, length of stay, average shelter population, and other trends, reporting findings to management.
  • Ensure proper animal housing while improving animal welfare and participate in daily rounds.
  • Communicate with management to create, update, and implement animal movement protocols for individual animals.
  • Issue recommendations on disposition, placement, and euthanasia for animals that may present a danger to the community or have other issues impacting their quality of life.
  • Lead regularly scheduled animal movement and training meetings, designing and implementing department standards and procedures.
  • Ensure kennel and facilities comply with TDSHS animal shelter requirements and coordinate with veterinarians for zoonotic disease surveillance.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of the department's annual budget by analyzing current expenditures and future requirements.
  • Supervise assigned staff, including scheduling, assigning work, and appraising employee performance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher.
  • Eight (8) years of animal services work experience.
  • Valid Texas Class 'C' Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
