About the position

The Shelter Operations Director is a pivotal role at East Bay SPCA, responsible for overseeing the effective operations of the organization's animal sheltering programs. This position involves strategic development, process improvement, and operational leadership to enhance the care of animals and the services provided to the community. The director will lead a team of animal welfare professionals, ensuring high standards of care and promoting the mission of the organization to enrich the human-animal bond.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, oversees, and monitors programs and practices at both shelter sites to maintain and improve the standards of client and shelter animal care.
  • Expands adoption methods and numbers, including evaluating off-site adoption opportunities and foster-to-adopt programming.
  • Facilitates stray animal intake and reunification/redemption efforts.
  • Supports clients and the community by providing accessible, inclusive services and resources.
  • Builds and maintains a network of rescue and shelter partners for appropriate adoption alternative placements.
  • Maintains knowledge of developments and trends in animal welfare and sheltering to ensure industry best practices are met.
  • Oversees the transfer and intake of cats and dogs at both facilities.
  • Participates in the evaluation of animals for adoption, rescue, or other outcomes.
  • Models efficient interaction with clients, promoting good public relations.
  • Encourages volunteer participation and collaborates with the Volunteer Services Manager.
  • Collaborates with Shelter Medicine and Behavior & Training departments for efficient animal flow.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with other departments to achieve organizational goals.
  • Transfers animals between East Bay SPCA campuses and offsite locations as needed.
  • Resolves customer concerns as a representative of East Bay SPCA leadership.
  • Leads collaborations for Operations teams with Philanthropy/Marketing departments.

Requirements

  • Minimum five years of management experience in animal welfare, including budgetary and staff supervision.
  • Experience working in an open admission non-profit or municipal animal shelter.
  • Ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to think critically, multi-task, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Shelter Buddy shelter software is a plus.
  • Reliable transportation, a valid CA driver's license, and proof of insurability required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to obtain Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit and California Certified Euthanasia Technician within six months of employment.
  • Confident and competent animal handler with dogs and cats of all sizes, conditions, and temperaments.
