About the position

The Shipboard Instrumentation Technician operates and maintains permanently installed oceanographic instrumentation on research vessels. At sea, this position supports researchers with the use of shipboard instrumentation, data collection, and assists researchers with the use of their research equipment on the vessel. When not at sea, this position conducts instrumentation maintenance, conducts planning for shipboard instrumentation needs of future projects, and provides remote technical assistance to technical staff at sea. This position requires the ability to spend up to four (4) months at sea annually, in one to two month increments.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain oceanographic instrumentation on research vessels.
  • Support researchers with shipboard instrumentation and data collection at sea.
  • Assist researchers with their research equipment on the vessel.
  • Conduct instrumentation maintenance when not at sea.
  • Plan for future shipboard instrumentation needs.
  • Provide remote technical assistance to technical staff at sea.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and/or operations being conducted at field/remote sites.
  • Experience with the interfaces and protocols used to connect instrumentation systems to computer systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot oceanographic instrumentation equipment at sea with manufacturer shore-based support.
  • Basic electronic troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with the operation of oceanographic instrumentation systems.
  • Ability to work in remote locations and at sea under potentially adverse conditions for extended periods.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with a team and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient research and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with project team members.
  • Experience with computer hardware and software maintenance.
