About The Position

The Shipfitter position at General Dynamics involves performing layout fabrication, assembly, installation, operation, modification, and testing of experimental components, materials, apparatus, and equipment at an advanced level. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of shipboard and industrial work practices, particularly in military environments. Candidates must be adept at reading and interpreting shipboard drawings and diagrams, which is crucial for the successful execution of tasks. The position entails setting up and operating various equipment and test apparatus, drafting detailed drawings or sketches for further processing, and fabricating new or modified mechanical components or assemblies. In addition to technical skills, the Shipfitter will evaluate the form, fit, and function of components and equipment to ensure they meet project objectives. This includes recording test procedures and results, performing routine analyses, and making recommendations for changes in equipment or testing methods. The role may also involve providing guidance and leadership to less-experienced technicians and participating in special projects as required. The position is integral to the development and testing of machinery and equipment, requiring a blend of practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Candidates should possess an associate degree or equivalent experience, with a preference for technical or vocational training. A minimum of three years of related experience in fabrication, maintenance, and repair of mechanical components is required. Additionally, candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to obtain a DBIDS Badge for access to various naval facilities and private shipyards. Travel may be required, with expectations set between 10-25%.
