About the position

The Short Term Disability Claim Specialist at MetLife is responsible for managing and administering claims related to short-term disability, ensuring compliance with contractual provisions and guidelines. This role involves establishing relationships with claimants to understand their perspectives and functional capacities, ultimately supporting their return to work when appropriate. The position requires effective communication, strategic thinking, and a focus on operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Manage overall STD block of claims and possible companion claims including Statutory plans, Federal, Company, State, and other Leave types as required.
  • Create and execute individual claim action plans, serving as the point of contact for claimants and providing high-level service.
  • Proactively communicate with claimants to set expectations and assess barriers to return to work.
  • Ensure timely updates to partners involved with the claimant during key events.
  • Meet and exceed operational efficiency and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Make accurate financial decisions on claims with benefit amounts up to $8000 per week.
  • Apply appropriate provisions of the disability contract throughout the claim process.
  • Perform all other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to build rapport and develop positive working relationships.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on maintaining data integrity.
  • Empathetic approach to claimant interactions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to change.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate Degree or higher
  • 2+ years of claims management experience, preferably in Healthcare.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge of STD and Family Medical Leave Act claims.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Understanding of disability contractual provisions and definitions.
  • Basic knowledge of medical conditions and treatments.
