The position of Instructional Aide I & II - Sign Language Interpreter involves performing a variety of sign interpreting assignments for students and teachers under the supervision of the Special Education program teacher. Responsibilities include tutoring and providing assistance for students with hearing problems, assisting teaching staff with the preparation of classroom materials, and supervising students.

Responsibilities

• Assists with communication between teachers and hearing impaired students through the use of manually coded English and/or American Sign Language.
• Interprets students' and teachers' classroom work, test responses, recitations, and reports into a form understood by all involved persons.
• Interprets films, records, tapes and other presentations using sign language.
• Accompanies students on field trips.
• Monitors students hearing enhancement equipment.
• Administers and corrects tests.
• Assists with the supervision and guidance of students.
• Checks students' progress and assists with individual work assignments.
• Prepares instructional and classroom materials.
• Participates in Individual Education Plan meetings.
• Assists with evaluating student progress and reviews of skill development.
• Researches sign language choice for subject matter vocabulary.
• Maintains classroom discipline and security.
• Assists with maintaining clean, neat, and orderly classroom facilities.
• Requisitions, receives and inventories supplies.
• Assists with developing communication skills, socialization, and playground skills.
• Maintains confidentiality to protect privacy of students, families, and staff.

Requirements

• Completion of specialized education courses in educational interpreting, psychology of deafness, education of the deaf, various sign languages and human/child development.
• Some experience in providing sign language interpreting for hearing impaired individuals.
• Fluency in American Sign Language and/or Manually Coded English system with ability and willingness to learn both.
• Passing score on Instructional Aide Proficiency Exam, 2 years college (48 units), or AA degree or higher.
• Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or have a score of 4.0 or above on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or the Educational Signs Skills Evaluation-Interpreter (ESSE).

Nice-to-haves

• One year of work experience comparable to that of an Instructional Aide I - Sign Language Interpreter with the completion of 24 semester units of childhood development, specialized sign language interpreting, or closely related courses.
• Three (3) years of work experience comparable to that of an Instructional Aide I - Sign Language Interpreter with the completion of 12 semester units of childhood development, specialized sign language interpreting, or closely related courses.
• Five (5) years of work experience comparable to that of an Instructional Aide I - Sign Language Interpreter with the passage of a Placer County Office of Education administered sign language proficiency evaluation.
