About the position

The Silicon Photonics / Optical Packaging Engineer at Apple, Inc. is responsible for leading the development of silicon photonics packaging technology. This role involves working with cross-functional teams to design and develop optical engine modules, optical coupling designs, and co-packaging optics. The engineer will focus on creating high-volume, low-cost optical interconnect applications, ensuring performance, reliability, yield, and cost-effectiveness in packaging solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Si photonics packaging technology development.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to lead optical engine module and optical coupling design efforts.
  • Drive micro-optical component assembly and interface characterization through innovation.
  • Collaborate with optical component vendors, foundries, and OSAT to bring Si photonics packaging solutions from concept to high-volume manufacturing (HVM).
  • Define assembly baseline processes and decide package bill of materials (BOM).
  • Establish optical coupling design and manufacturing optimized for performance, reliability, yield, and cost.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree plus 10 years of work experience in a related field.
  • Strong theoretical background in optics and photonics fundamentals, device/module integration.
  • Hands-on experience in packaging and measuring fiber-coupled devices.
  • Experience in optical component design, simulation, and qualification, as well as single/multi-mode fiber assembly using active and passive alignment tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. and/or Ph.D. in Physics (Optics major), Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in the related field with M.S. and/or Ph.D.
  • Hands-on experience with CMOS BEOL wafer scale processing and flip chip assembly (CoC, CoW, WLP, etc.).
  • Experience with silicon photonics devices such as lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and passive components like silicon waveguides and MUX/DeMUX.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical and dental coverage.
  • Retirement benefits.
  • Discounted products and free services.
  • Reimbursement for certain educational expenses, including tuition.
  • Opportunity to participate in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs.
