About the position

The Site Reliability Engineer - Observability at Emerald Cloud Laboratory (ECL) plays a crucial role in ensuring the security, reliability, and capacity of the software and virtual machines that support the ECL cloud application. This position focuses on automating and improving development and production environments, utilizing a variety of programming languages and tools to enhance infrastructure reliability and performance. The role involves collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to implement observability solutions and manage cloud infrastructure effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop processes and tools to automate and audit all aspects of development and production environments and databases for the ECL cloud application backend.
  • Continuously improve in-house Go and Python facilities for automating container builds and deployments, and the Wolfram Language-based automated unit testing environment.
  • Develop applications related to laboratory systems and automate provision and deployment of Wolfram Enterprise Private Cloud instances.
  • Coordinate with and advise other teams to plan and execute releases of application upgrades, new services, and migrations without service degradation.
  • Efficiently prioritize ad hoc requests alongside roadmap initiatives.
  • Coordinate with IT to evaluate and integrate open-source and commercial tools.

Requirements

  • Proficient in coding with Python and Go, focusing on developing and automating solutions for infrastructure reliability.
  • Experience in implementing comprehensive observability solutions, including distributed tracing with OpenTelemetry and creating dashboards with Grafana.
  • Proven track record of setting up Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
  • Proficient in CI/CD tools and automating deployment pipelines to Kubernetes.
  • Hands-on experience in AWS cloud infrastructure management, including EKS, Fargate, IAM, S3, and VPC.
  • Deep understanding of cloud networking and security concepts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in building observability solutions for end-to-end distributed systems, particularly microservices in Kubernetes.
  • Experience in setting up front-end observability solutions for web-based and desktop applications.
