About the position

The Site Reliability Engineer at USAA plays a crucial role in ensuring the availability and reliability of applications within the Property & Casualty Information Technology organization. This senior-level position involves leading application teams through their Site Reliability journey, utilizing advanced monitoring and technology tools to maintain system performance and availability for USAA members and customer service representatives. The role requires collaboration with engineers and architects, mentoring team members, and addressing complex technical challenges to enhance the overall quality and architecture of the systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, code, and test complex technical solutions across various technologies.
  • Lead code/design reviews and communicate updates to stakeholders.
  • Develop complex algorithms to solve business needs.
  • Investigate and resolve complex application and system technical problems.
  • Mentor and coach engineers on design, development, and maintenance of systems.
  • Influence and shape the future of the domain's architecture and quality standards.
  • Identify system performance issues and optimize solutions.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or 4 additional years of experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 6 years of software development experience with depth in specific technologies.
  • 4 years of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software development lifecycle.
  • Basic understanding of Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL, Go, and Python.
  • Experience researching technical issues and generating innovative solutions.
  • Experience addressing production issues by troubleshooting applications and systems.
  • Strong knowledge of security coding practices and secure system fundamentals.
  • Experience working with cloud technologies and tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with development of Property & Casualty applications.
  • Understanding of SRE principles and experience with application availability.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and incident management.
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as ELK and DataDog.
