About the position

Dentsply Sirona, the world's largest manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies, is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to join their Waltham, MA location. This role is crucial in ensuring system reliability and performance, acting as part of a global team that provides 24/7 emergency support for products. The Site Reliability Engineer will be responsible for restoring services as quickly as possible when downtime occurs, and will work in a partially remote capacity, balancing remote work with in-office responsibilities. As a member of the Software Engineering & User Experience (SWUX) organization, under the Team Lead Site Reliability Engineering, the successful candidate will leverage their technical expertise to optimize system performance and drive continuous improvement. The role involves gathering and analyzing metrics from operating systems and applications to assist in performance tuning and fault finding. The engineer will partner with development and operations teams to enhance services through rigorous testing and release procedures, perform root cause analyses, and implement effective solutions. In addition to improving existing systems through automation, the Site Reliability Engineer will participate in system design consulting and platform management. They will be accountable for running the production environment, monitoring availability, and maintaining a holistic view of system health. The engineer will also build software and systems to manage platform infrastructure and applications, ensuring the reliability and quality of products within a microservice architecture. This position requires a proactive approach to measuring and optimizing system performance, anticipating customer needs, and innovating for continual improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze metrics from operating systems and applications to assist in performance tuning and fault finding.
  • Partner with development and operations teams to improve services through rigorous testing and release procedures; perform root cause analyses and implement solutions.
  • Collaborate with architecture teams to enhance system design.
  • Improve existing systems through automation and uplifts.
  • Participate in system design consulting and platform management.
  • Balance feature development speed and reliability with well-defined service-level objectives.
  • Run the production environment by monitoring availability and taking a holistic view of system health.
  • Build software and systems to manage platform infrastructure and applications.
  • Improve reliability and quality of products in our microservice architecture.
  • Measure and optimize system performance, pushing capabilities forward and innovating for continual improvement.
  • Act as 24/7 emergency 2nd/3rd level support for products; restore services ASAP when downtime occurs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering or relevant experience.
  • At least 3 years' experience in a Site Reliability Engineering / Platform Engineering / DevOps role or similar.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and proven experience resolving production downtime with immediate and long-term solutions.
  • A deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis, and software design.
  • Good analytical skills coupled with excellent communication skills; professional English is required, German is a bonus.
  • At least Google Associate Cloud Engineer certification; higher certifications are a bonus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous software development experience in Golang, C++, or any other modern programming language; Flutter experience is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog) and project tracking software (e.g., Jira).
  • Good understanding of systems automation and IT Security.
