About the position

The Skilled Trade Specialist I position at the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) is a critical role focused on maintaining the functionality and safety of MVA buildings across the state. This position requires a dynamic and progressive candidate who is dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service while performing a variety of maintenance tasks. The Skilled Trade Specialist I will be responsible for the effective completion of daily work assignments, ensuring that all maintenance work adheres to the relevant codes and regulations governing electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and plumbing systems. The role involves a hands-on approach to maintenance, requiring physical exertion and the ability to work in various conditions, both indoors and outdoors. Key responsibilities include installing various fixtures such as pictures, bulletin boards, and cabinets, as well as moving furniture and performing repairs on office equipment. The Specialist will also be tasked with cleaning and maintaining the grounds, painting, and performing snow removal operations. This position requires the ability to document maintenance activities and ensure that all tools and equipment are properly maintained. Employees in this role are considered essential and may be required to respond to emergency situations at any time, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The position is based in Charles County, with potential for assignments in other counties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Installing pictures, bulletin boards, dry erase boards, TVs, plaques, clocks, shelves, banners, signs, and cabinets.
  • Moving desks, file cabinets, modular furniture, installing doors, making copies of keys, replacing ceiling tiles, installing dropped ceilings, repairing cabinets, and hardware.
  • Setting up tables and chairs for special events.
  • Cleaning sidewalks and grounds, dumping and removing trash and recycling inside and outside of the buildings.
  • Painting offices, stairways, floors, parking lines, and installing and replacing floor tile.
  • Performing snow removal and maintaining snow equipment, including documenting snow removal operations.
  • Installing door windows, door hardware, locks, drywall, studs, baseboards, floor tile, and molding.
  • Maintaining and caring for tools and special equipment.
  • Replacing fluorescent, LED lights, and emergency lights.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Two years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, or HVAC.
  • A certificate from a vocational technical school in one or more of the skilled trades may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in utilities repair or construction may substitute for required experience.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license in the State of Maryland.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) during the probationary period if required.
