About the position

The SLD Thermal Hardware Design Engineer III role at Blue Origin focuses on the development of thermal control systems for lunar transportation. This position is integral to the Lunar Transportation business unit, contributing to the design and testing of spacecraft thermal components, particularly cold plates and heat exchangers. The engineer will collaborate with NASA and other partners to ensure the successful integration of these systems into lunar landers, emphasizing safety, innovation, and quality in human spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Define and develop spacecraft thermal control systems for lunar transportation.
  • Design, size, build, and test thermal components such as cold plates and heat exchangers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver results on thermal hardware projects.
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and execution reports.
  • Conduct occasional thermal analysis and contribute to long-term development plans.
  • Make buy decisions regarding thermal components and systems.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 5 years of relevant Thermal Engineering experience.
  • Strong grasp of heat transfer and fluid system fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with heat exchangers, cold plates, and other common spacecraft hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, sizing, building, and testing hardware.
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation methods for component-level analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience working in cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, and heat exchangers.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards such as AS9100D, ASME, SAE, AWS, and ANSI Y14.5 specifications.
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems.
  • Vendor technical management experience.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly experience.
  • Familiarity with Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint.
