About the position

The Thermal Hardware Design Engineer III at Blue Origin will play a crucial role in the Lunar Transportation business unit, contributing to the development of spacecraft thermal control systems. This position involves working closely with NASA and other partners to ensure the successful transport of crew and cargo to the lunar surface. The engineer will be responsible for thermal components from conception through testing and integration, working in a fast-paced environment that demands innovative solutions and technical expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the definition and development of spacecraft thermal control systems.
  • Design, size, build, and test thermal hardware components such as heat exchangers and cold plates.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver results on thermal components for lunar landers.
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and execution reports.
  • Participate in the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 5 years of relevant Thermal Engineering experience.
  • Strong grasp of heat transfer and fluid system fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with heat exchangers, cold plates, and other common spacecraft hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, sizing, building, and testing hardware.
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation process.
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation methods for component-level analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers, etc.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards such as AS9100D, ASME, SAE, AWS and ANSI Y14.5 specifications.
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems demonstrating breadth in application.
  • Vendor technical management experience.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly experience is a plus.
