About the position

The SLD Thermal Hardware Design Engineer III will be responsible for the development of thermal control systems for lunar transportation vehicles at Blue Origin. This role involves working closely with NASA and other partners to ensure the successful design, testing, and integration of thermal components, contributing to the mission of sustainable human presence on the Moon. The engineer will be part of a collaborative team, applying technical expertise and leadership skills to innovate and solve complex thermal engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Define and develop spacecraft thermal control systems for lunar transportation.
  • Design, size, build, and test thermal components such as cold plates and heat exchangers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver results on thermal hardware projects.
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and execution reports.
  • Conduct thermal analysis and make/buy decisions for hardware components.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term plans for thermal hardware integration.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 5 years of relevant Thermal Engineering experience.
  • Strong grasp of heat transfer and fluid system fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with heat exchangers, cold plates, and other spacecraft hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, sizing, building, and testing hardware.
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation methods.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware and semi-passive devices.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards such as AS9100D, ASME, SAE, AWS, and ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems.
  • Vendor technical management experience.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly experience.
  • Familiarity with Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint.
