About the position

The SLD Thermal Hardware Design Engineer III role at Blue Origin focuses on the development of spacecraft thermal control systems for lunar transportation. This position is integral to the Lunar Transportation business unit, contributing to the design and testing of thermal components essential for crew and cargo transport to the Moon. The engineer will work collaboratively with NASA and other partners, ensuring the successful integration of thermal hardware into lunar landers while maintaining a commitment to safety and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Define and develop spacecraft thermal control systems for lunar transportation.
  • Contribute to the design and testing of thermal components from conception through integration with the vehicle.
  • Collaborate with the Thermal Analysis group and other engineering teams to ensure effective thermal management solutions.
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and execution reports for thermal hardware.
  • Participate in the verification and validation process for aerospace hardware.
  • Engage in make/buy decisions and long-term development planning for thermal components.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 5 years of relevant Thermal Engineering experience.
  • Solid understanding of thermal/fluid fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft fluid routing hardware including flexlines, hoses, and fittings.
  • Demonstrated experience assembling and testing hardware.
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
  • Familiarity with common spacecraft thermal hardware.
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
  • Ability to maintain positive and professional relationships and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Experience in designing fluid routing systems and defining specifications for flexlines, hoses, and fittings.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, and heat exchangers.
  • Experience specifying and evaluating fluid systems to meet mechanical and structural design requirements.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly experience for fluid loop hardware.
  • Vendor technical management experience.
  • Material properties testing experience.
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems demonstrating breadth in application.
  • Experience maturing a design from requirements definition through hardware delivery.
