About the position

The SLD Thermal Hardware Design Engineer III role at Blue Origin focuses on the development of spacecraft thermal control systems for lunar transportation. This position involves working within a diverse team to design, test, and integrate thermal components, ensuring safe human spaceflight as part of the Lunar Transportation business unit. The engineer will collaborate with NASA and other partners, contributing to the Human Landing System program and developing innovative solutions in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the definition and development of spacecraft thermal control systems.
  • Design and develop thermal components from conception through testing and integration.
  • Work closely with the Thermal Analysis group within the Lunar Thermal integrated product team.
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and execution reports.
  • Participate in make/buy decisions and short/long term development plans.
  • Collaborate with a team of Thermal Engineers and Analysts on lunar lander projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 5 years of relevant Thermal Engineering experience.
  • Solid understanding of thermal/fluid fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft fluid routing hardware including flexlines, hoses, and fittings.
  • Demonstrated experience assembling and testing hardware.
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
  • Familiarity with common spacecraft thermal hardware.
  • Familiarity with structural design fundamentals related to thermal/fluid hardware.
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive professional relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Experience in designing fluid routing systems and defining specifications for flexlines, hoses, and fittings.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers, etc.
  • Experience specifying and evaluating fluid systems to meet mechanical and structural design requirements.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly experience for fluid loop hardware.
  • Vendor technical management experience.
  • Material properties testing experience.
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems.
