About the position

The Small Craft Specialist at Sleep Away Camp is responsible for ensuring the safety and effective delivery of all small craft programs. This role involves teaching small craft lessons, supervising waterfront staff, and coordinating camp activities while adhering to safety regulations and standards. The specialist will also assist with general camp operations and participate in training and emergency drills.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the daily implementation of the waterfront program.
  • Works cooperatively to enrich all-camp and aquatic programs including swimming, boating, and rainy-day activities.
  • Assists the Waterfront Director in developing and enforcing waterfront safety measures and emergency procedures.
  • Supervises and cares for campers during designated activities and facilitates program delivery within a unit.
  • Participates in all staff training, including in-service and pre-camp skills trainings.
  • Assesses small craft skills of staff and campers for classification and safety skills assessment.
  • Maintains health and safety standards for campers, staff, and self.
  • Reports accidents and files incident reports promptly.
  • Assumes responsibility for small craft records and daily inspections.
  • Ensures proper care and use of small craft and related equipment, reporting repairs as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge of emergency protocol and makes life-saving decisions when necessary.
  • Participates in all emergency drills, including aquatics emergencies.
  • Engages in unit and all camp activities as assigned.
  • Participates in opening and closing procedures of the camp season, including inventory.
  • Maintains professional camper/staff relationships throughout the camp season.
  • Keeps records, reports, and maintenance requisitions as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with a diverse group of staff and campers.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in extreme environmental conditions.
  • Demonstrated small craft safety, lifeguarding, and swimming skill competencies.
  • Experience in camping, swimming, group leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Willingness to abide by the policies and practices of the Girl Scouts of Connecticut.
  • Supervisory/management experience preferred.
