About the position

The Hanover is seeking a Senior Field Underwriter to join our Small Commercial Underwriting team in the Mid-Atlantic region. This full-time, exempt role is eligible for a fully remote arrangement. The Senior Field Underwriter will play a crucial role in driving the growth of Small Commercial Liability (CL) business by underwriting new business across all lines and sizes of Point of Sale (POS) and Non-POS accounts. This position requires building and maintaining strong relationships with agency partners, including Agency staff and Small Commercial Sales Managers (SCSMs). The Senior Field Underwriter will work closely with and direct the activities of their Underwriting Team (UT) partners, following established workflows to ensure effective underwriting practices. In this role, the Senior Field Underwriter will categorize and direct the UT on the next steps based on assessments and categorizations of accounts. They will document underwriting decisions within the standards and expectations set in the underwriting systems. Effective communication of coverages, including highlighting coverage advantages during the quoting process, is essential. The Senior Field Underwriter will also identify cross-sell opportunities for Specialty businesses on accounts being quoted, while the overall account responsibility will fall to the Portfolio Underwriter. Consultation between the Field and Portfolio Underwriter is expected as required, particularly in communicating declination reasons and coverage advantages to agents to improve hit ratios. Proactive communication with agents is vital to convey a sense of ownership and service during all interactions. The Senior Field Underwriter must instill confidence in agents regarding their decision to place new business with The Hanover, primarily working with SCSMs, UTs, and Renewal Underwriters to communicate difficult messages effectively and manage overall agency relationships. Responsibilities

  • Drive the growth of Small CL business by underwriting new business across all lines and sizes of POS and Non-POS accounts.
  • Build and maintain strong agency relationships partnering with Agency staff and SCSMs.
  • Categorize and direct UT on next steps based on assessment and categorization.
  • Document underwriting decisions within standards and expectations in Underwriting systems.
  • Communicate coverages including coverage advantages to highlight in the quoting process.
  • Identify cross-sell opportunities for Specialty businesses on accounts being quoted.
  • Instill confidence with agents in their decision to place new business with The Hanover.
  • Communicate proactively with Agents to convey a sense of ownership and service during all interactions.

Requirements

  • Ideally 3+ years in the Small Commercial Underwriting capacity.
  • Strong underwriting skill and coverage knowledge; ability to make underwriting decisions on POS and CPP accounts up to $50,000 premium size.
  • Sales orientation: able to solicit, qualify, negotiate and close accounts in a manner that promotes deeper partnership with Agents.
  • Demonstrated commitment to service and partners; high level of responsiveness to UTs, SCSMs, and renewal UWs.
