About the position

The Small Group Exercise Coach at the YMCA of the East Bay is responsible for providing expert fitness instruction and personal attention to members in a safe and enjoyable environment. This role involves teaching group fitness classes, ensuring member safety, and promoting health and wellness among a diverse population. The coach will engage with members, maintain facility standards, and contribute to program design while embodying the YMCA's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Provide highly engaging fitness instruction to members of all fitness levels in group workouts.
  • Provide instruction to members on the safe use of all equipment and workouts.
  • Assist in fitness program and workshop design.
  • Set up fitness orientations/coaching sessions for members.
  • Greet members and provide quality member service.
  • Maintain high standards of communication with supervisor, members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of all facility and equipment in the Fitness Centers.
  • Record information as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Attend all department staff meetings and trainings specified by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Sports Science, or related field preferred.
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) certification, USA Weightlifting, CrossFit L1 or higher, NASM CPT, or ISSA Strength and Conditioning certification.
  • 2+ years of experience in strength and conditioning preferred.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in the field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Completion of YMCA safety certifications must be accomplished within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Part-time position with competitive pay of $38.25 per class.
