About the position

The SMB Account Manager at H&R Block is responsible for building and maintaining long-term relationships with small business clients, serving as their primary point of contact for bookkeeping and payroll services. This role involves overseeing a portfolio of clients, ensuring high-quality service delivery, and identifying new business opportunities. The Account Manager acts as a trusted advisor, helping clients navigate their accounting needs and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead point of contact for all assigned bookkeeping and payroll clients.
  • Oversee the entire client acquisition process from referral to onboarding, ensuring a great client experience.
  • Responsible for outreach and follow-up of client referrals to maximize conversion to service.
  • Negotiate contracts and close agreements to meet client needs and growth targets.
  • Assist client onboarding onto accounting and payroll platforms.
  • Examine and request source documentation and financial statements.
  • Review client financial statements for accuracy, making manual journal entries and corrections as needed.
  • Develop and maintain trusting and long-lasting advisor relationships with clients.
  • Communicate bookkeeping and payroll results on behalf of the client with tax professionals.
  • Research payroll laws and financial accounting for compliance with GAAP.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of account management experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent listening, negotiation, and presentation abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple account management projects with attention to detail.
  • Experience delivering client-focused solutions to customer needs.
  • Solid experience with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate, present, and influence key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced problem resolution skills.
