About the position

The Smelter Diagnostic Mechanic at Freeport-McMoRan plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing heavy equipment within the Acid Plant. This position involves performing diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on various machinery, ensuring operational efficiency and safety in a collaborative work environment. The mechanic will also be responsible for training and mentoring other employees, contributing to a culture of safety and excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic, maintenance and repair of heavy equipment such as Haul Trucks, Water Trucks, Rubber Tire and Track Dozers, Front-end Loaders, and Motor Graders.
  • Remove, repair and install transmissions, engines, brakes, differentials, pumps, motors, torque converters, final drives and other heavy equipment systems or components.
  • Conduct mechanical and lubrication preventative maintenance on machine systems such as hydraulic, power train and engines.
  • Prioritize and make decisions regarding equipment repair as needed.
  • Maintain work orders and perform work area inspections.
  • Operate mobile equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, and boom trucks.
  • Perform various welding techniques including Carbon arc, Plasma, Mig, Tig, and Stick.
  • Act as a Fill-in Supervisor as required.
  • Train and mentor other employees.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years' experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts (including welder, boilermaker, machinist or facility maintenance/construction) or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance.
  • Completion of academic and practical competencies required, including Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP exists.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures in English.
  • Ability to communicate in English regarding job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards.
  • Ability to prioritize repairs and possess excellent decision-making skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machine systems.
  • Ability to work and effectively communicate with others.
  • Ability to read and use blueprints.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience operating larger than 20 ton mobile crane.
  • Certified in welding SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Weld) 3&4G structure plate test.
  • Certified in welding SMAW 6G or 2&5G pipe test.
  • Experience in pipe fitting and fabrication.
  • Able to read and interpret fabrication drawings.
  • Previous experience in chemical manufacturing and/or processing industry.
  • Proficiency in repair and diagnosing pumping systems including Positive Displacement Pumps, Centrifugal Pumps, Pneumatic Pumps, and Vertical Pumps.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining, repairing and replacing screw conveyors, bucket elevators and heavy rotating equipment.
  • Familiarity with RCM technology in Vibration Analysis, Tribology, Thermography, Nondestructive testing, Laser Alignment and Fan Balancing.
