About the position
The position involves skilled work in the smelting of metals from ore within various areas of a plant, including the Isa smelting vessel, electric furnace, convertors, anode plant, and acid plant. The role requires operating machinery, performing maintenance, and ensuring safety protocols are followed while working in a potentially hazardous environment.
Responsibilities
- Operate tapping machines and belting systems in the Isa smelting vessel area.
- Work on and around an industrial boiler.
- Operate tapping machines and a slag hauler in the electric furnace area.
- Clean launders used for molten metal transfers.
- Work around ventilation equipment including fans and scrubbers.
- Handle electrode-hydraulic systems and perform minor maintenance activities.
- Run belt systems and handle silica flux and reverts in the convertor area.
- Assist with water systems, casting systems, hydraulic systems, and refining processes in the anode plant.
- Assist with starting and stopping valves and pumps in the acid plant.
- Retrieve acid stream samples and analyze samples for acid strength.
- Unload railcars and bulk bags in the utility area.
- Manage truck unloading of copper concentrate and other materials.
- Transfer materials via belt systems within the smelter.
- Assist with maintenance activities such as changing valves and piping.
- Operate various heavy machinery and vehicles as needed.
- Mentor and train fellow employees.
- Modify and create smelter operations standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Perform area housekeeping and other duties as required.
Requirements
- Minimum six (6) months of experience with material handling equipment.
- Good communication skills.
- Completion of academic and practical competencies required for the position.
