The Medical Receptionist at Sparrow Health System plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth patient services and administrative operations within the healthcare facility. This position is primarily responsible for performing general clerical duties associated with patient services, which include scheduling appointments, greeting and admitting patients, discharging patients, and answering all incoming phone calls. The Medical Receptionist will also assist in maintaining medical records and ensuring that all patient interactions are handled with professionalism and care. In this role, the Medical Receptionist will greet and interact with patients, visitors, and other stakeholders, providing them with relevant information regarding department procedures, fees, and services. They will facilitate referrals to physicians and ancillary departments, ensuring that patients receive the necessary care in a timely manner. The position requires answering incoming calls, responding to inquiries, and making appropriate referrals within the department or to external practices. Additionally, the Medical Receptionist will be responsible for opening, sorting, reviewing, and distributing mail, as well as compiling pertinent data for patient demographic records. The Medical Receptionist will also be tasked with admitting and discharging patients, scheduling appointments, referring patients for tests and other services, and taking phone notes as needed. Completing required forms and reports, entering data into the computer for correct insurance billing, and tabulating receipts following billing procedures are also essential duties of this position. Maintaining records and files, obtaining authorization forms for services, and releasing records are part of the daily responsibilities. The Medical Receptionist will operate various standard and automated office equipment, including computers, typewriters, calculators, telephones, intercoms, photocopy machines, and fax machines. Furthermore, the Medical Receptionist may assume a preceptor role for new clerical assistants or new medical assistant clerical staff, providing guidance and support as they acclimate to their roles within the organization.
