About the position

The SOAR Benefits Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness, particularly those with serious mental illnesses or co-occurring substance use disorders, in applying for Social Security disability benefits. This position requires a compassionate approach and the ability to work flexibly in various community settings, ensuring that clients receive the necessary support and advocacy throughout the application process.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients to assess appropriateness of SOAR referrals
  • Provide education/training to providers, community partners, and stakeholders
  • Compose medical summaries to support clients' need for SSI/SSDI benefits
  • Accompany clients to disability hearings and appointments as needed
  • Act as client advocate for medical and mental health evaluation and treatment during SOAR process
  • Assist clients with securing permanent or safe housing
  • Ensure transition to community team for post-housing support
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with payee services

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in a Human Service field and minimum one year of relevant experience OR Bachelor's degree in a field other than human services and at least four years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's degree in a Human Service or related field and a minimum of two years of relevant experience
  • Must obtain SOAR Caseworker Certification (can obtain upon hire, if needed)
  • Valid state driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work in non-traditional settings and unstructured environments
  • Evidence of ongoing training and education in related areas such as mental illness, substance abuse, and/or homelessness
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet frequent deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience providing some level of case management

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of formal and informal resources in Wake County
