About the position

The Social Media Manager at the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and reputation of the educator profession by highlighting best practices and sharing impactful stories that reflect the significance of public education. This position is responsible for ensuring that CDE provides timely, accurate, and accessible information to the community while engaging Coloradans around the department's strategic priorities, which include increasing student engagement, accelerating student outcomes, strengthening the educator workforce, and ensuring operational excellence. The Social Media Manager will design and implement comprehensive social and digital media strategies that resonate with various audiences, utilizing storytelling as a key tool to connect with the public. In this role, the manager will create and curate content for the department's social media platforms, digital newsletters, and website, ensuring that all communications align with the department's goals and values. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Communications Officer and will be expected to work collaboratively with other departments to develop and execute social media campaigns that promote CDE initiatives. The position requires a proactive and self-directed individual who is also eager to collaborate on larger projects and ideas. The role is hybrid, allowing for a combination of remote work and in-office presence in Denver, with travel expectations of up to 25% statewide to visit various sites.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the department's social media strategy and content plan, targeting specific audiences and platforms.
  • Collaborate within the organization to create and execute program- and initiative-aligned social media campaigns.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on relevant data to assess the effectiveness of strategies and campaigns, driving continuous improvement.
  • Create, write, and edit print and visual content for the department's social media channels, managing content scheduling.
  • Work with district-level communicators and CDE staff to identify internal and external storytelling opportunities, including photography and videography.
  • Implement effective strategies to increase user engagement and audience size on social media platforms.
  • Write and edit content for the department's digital communications, including newsletters and the website.
  • Provide strategic communications planning support and guidance to department colleagues based on message and target audience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related liberal arts field.
  • Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public relations, and/or marketing, demonstrating increased roles and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated success in leveraging social media to increase awareness and engage the public.
  • Exceptional writing skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven experience cultivating messaging for different audiences.
  • Experience developing successful public relations/communications strategies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in communication within a K12 public education system.
  • Experience with large audiences (Mass Communications).
