About the position

The Social Science Research Assistant position at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) involves conducting social science research on critical international security issues, particularly focusing on nuclear weapons policy and the laws of armed conflict. The role requires strong analytical skills and the ability to draft reports, support teaching activities, and manage various administrative tasks. This is a one-year fixed-term position that offers benefits and the opportunity to work closely with Professor Scott Sagan.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct social science research on international security issues, including nuclear weapons policy and laws of armed conflict.
  • Draft reports and assist with funding proposals, including budget tracking and account expenditures.
  • Support teaching activities by preparing PowerPoint presentations and other correspondence.
  • Organize course simulations and manage logistics as the course administrator.
  • Manage a busy calendar, arrange travel, and handle reimbursements and payments.
  • Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales.
  • Analyze and summarize research results for review with the supervisor.
  • Conduct literature searches and write literature summaries and manuscripts.
  • Build and organize data as requested by the principal investigator or supervisor.
  • Assist with the communication and design of research findings for internal and external audiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in a relevant social science field or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with nuclear policy, laws of armed conflict, or just war issues is desired.
  • Experience with survey experiments and statistical software such as Stata, R, or Qualtrics is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Amazon's Mechanical Turk for survey experiments.
