About the position

The Social Service Assistant IV position at the Hawaii State Hospital is a permanent part-time role that involves extensive fieldwork and outreach functions. The individual in this role will serve as a liaison between professional staff and clients, as well as potential clients, ensuring that they receive the necessary support and services. A significant part of the job includes performing preliminary screenings to determine continued eligibility for various social service programs. This position is crucial in facilitating communication and understanding between clients and the services available to them, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of the social service delivery system. In this role, the Social Service Assistant IV will engage directly with clients, providing supportive services that may include clerical tasks, transportation of clients and materials, and observation and reporting of client interactions and symptoms. The assistant will also be responsible for explaining available services to clients and assisting in overseeing group activities, which may include recreational outings such as bowling and swimming. The position requires a high degree of verbal skill and the ability to apply written directions effectively, as well as basic mathematical computation skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in social services or a health-related agency, with at least three years of relevant experience. This experience should include direct engagement with clients and the ability to work independently as part of a team. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • Three years of experience providing supportive services in a social service or health-related agency.
  • At least one year of experience comparable to the Social Service Aid III in State government.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply written directions.
  • High degree of verbal skill and ability to make basic mathematical computations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
