About the position

The Social Studies Teacher for grades 7-12 at Norman High School is responsible for fostering students' understanding of world cultures, historical evolution, and the socio-political factors that shape societies. Under the supervision of the School Principal, the teacher will develop and implement a comprehensive Social Studies curriculum that aligns with district goals and objectives. This role requires the creation of lesson plans and instructional materials that translate into engaging learning experiences, focusing on historical problems and encouraging critical thinking among students. The teacher will cover a wide range of topics including history, geography, economics, political science, and responsible citizenship. They will help students understand the complexities of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups, as well as the socio-economic factors that influence human rights and freedoms. The position emphasizes the importance of historical context in evaluating current issues and predicting future trends, encouraging students to draw connections between past and present. In addition to teaching, the Social Studies Teacher will assess student learning and adapt instructional methods to meet individual needs, including those of students with special requirements. The role also involves promoting parental involvement, maintaining accurate records of student progress, and collaborating with other staff members. Continuous professional development is expected, with opportunities to attend workshops and seminars to stay updated on educational practices. The teacher will also be responsible for maintaining a conducive learning environment and ensuring that student behavior aligns with school policies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer Social Studies curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Create lesson plans and instructional materials that translate into effective learning experiences.
  • Teach knowledge of social studies, incorporating history, geography, economics, political science, and responsible citizenship.
  • Develop students' understanding of various racial, ethnic, religious, and political groups.
  • Foster an understanding of the continuity and patterns of human behavior through the ages.
  • Demonstrate how historical context can inform current issues and future actions.
  • Develop students' research skills and critical thinking through various assignments.
  • Promote critical analysis of media's effect on public discourse.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student learning and modify instructional methods as needed.
  • Organize and maintain accurate records of student activities and attendance.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior in the classroom.
  • Coordinate with other staff members and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Select and requisition appropriate instructional materials and maintain inventory records.

Requirements

  • Current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate with endorsements for the appropriate level/subject area.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field from a college/university recognized by the State Board of Education.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of world history and various sub-topics including geography, sociology, and political science.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation for professional growth.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Familiarity with data information systems and data analysis.
