About the position

The Social Studies Teacher at South Bend Empowerment Zone is responsible for teaching various Social Studies courses, including U.S. Government, U.S. History, Economics, World History, World Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and Law Education. The role involves creating an engaging classroom environment, maintaining student behavior standards, and delivering instructional activities that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues to design lessons that meet state and common core standards while also accommodating the diverse needs of students.

Responsibilities

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and student engagement.
  • Establish and maintain standards for student behavior promoting fairness and respect.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities to engage students in problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies and resources to meet students' diverse needs.
  • Collaborate with Social Studies colleagues to design lessons reflecting Indiana State Standards and Common Core Standards.
  • Maintain accurate grade and attendance records.
  • Use summative and formative assessments to guide instructional decision-making.
  • Participate in the 8-step process of instruction and remediation/enrichment.
  • Communicate with parents, counselors, and administration to proactively address student academic and behavioral progress.
  • Utilize available technology to support instruction.
  • Be punctual and reliable in attendance and supervise students as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities offered by the school corporation or professional organizations.
  • Follow Individual Education Plans, Behavior Support Plans, and/or 504 intervention plans to accommodate students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid High School Level License/Certification in the subject course areas listed.
  • Ideal candidates will be certified to teach multiple social studies courses.
  • Candidates must not have had a recommendation for Probation Assistance on their most recent evaluation.
  • Alternative Education experience preferred.
