About the position

The Social Worker I MSW at CHOC Children's is a vital role responsible for delivering social services through a collaborative process that involves patients, families, ancillary care, providers, and the community. The primary goal of the Social Worker is to maximize the ability of patients and their families to achieve optimal health and behavioral health outcomes. This position requires a comprehensive assessment of the patient and family, advocating within the health system, providing education and counseling, and linking patients and families to community resources to meet their needs. The Social Worker also contributes to the overall quality of the department through program development, mentoring, and quality improvement activities. In this role, the Social Worker will engage with a diverse pediatric population, ensuring that each child and family receives tailored support that addresses their unique circumstances. The position demands a strong understanding of developmental stages, behavioral health, and effective counseling techniques. The Social Worker will work closely with other healthcare professionals to create and implement care plans that promote the well-being of patients. Additionally, the role involves navigating complex social systems and resources, requiring excellent communication and negotiation skills to facilitate connections to necessary services. The Social Worker will also be expected to maintain a high standard of ethics and professionalism in all interactions, exercising sound judgment in challenging situations. This position is full-time and operates on a day shift schedule, providing an opportunity to make a significant impact in the lives of children and families within the community.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver social services through a collaborative process involving patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Assess the needs of patients and families to advocate for their health and behavioral health outcomes.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding available resources.
  • Link patients and families to community resources to meet their needs.
  • Contribute to program development and quality improvement activities within the department.
  • Mentor and support colleagues in delivering high-quality social work services.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in a health/behavioral health care setting or social service setting serving children and families.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure due to changing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
  • Clinical knowledge of developmental stages, behavioral health, counseling techniques, and care planning.
  • Strong cultural humility and organizational skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two (2) years of experience in a pediatric hospital.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/Vietnamese.
  • Working knowledge of mental health, interpersonal violence, child welfare, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care.
  • ACM or CCM certification.
