About the position

The Social Worker for the Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Clinic at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center is responsible for overseeing the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorder program within the New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System. This role involves program coordination, administration, and providing comprehensive psychosocial support to veterans with spinal cord injuries. The incumbent will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure quality care and compliance with healthcare standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a system to identify SCI patients served by the facility and community.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all inquiries regarding the SCI program.
  • Promote and coordinate annual evaluations within the SCI Center and appropriate SCI Outpatient Clinics.
  • Develop procedures for referrals between the SCI Center and local VA/community hospitals.
  • Establish performance standards for the SCI program to promote quality and efficiency.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with accrediting bodies and regulatory standards.
  • Research community resources to provide continuity of care for Veterans.
  • Explore long-term care placement options in the community.
  • Identify unmet needs of the SCI population and collaborate with relevant offices.
  • Develop a data-driven continuous quality improvement program to evaluate the program's effectiveness.
  • Complete psychosocial evaluations and assessments for each patient served.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with SCI Veterans and their families.
  • Manage and coordinate provision of various services for Veterans.
  • Refer Veterans to community resources for services not available from the VHA facility.
  • Maintain a current network of referral resources for various treatments and services.
  • Make home visits to assess the home environment for service provision.
  • Establish and maintain an ongoing education program for patients, students, and staff.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level.
  • Must have a Master's degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work.
  • At least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure, with one year equivalent to GS-11 grade level.
  • Knowledge of program coordination and administration, including consultation and negotiation.
  • Ability to write policies, procedures, and practice guidelines for the program.
  • Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
  • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, and meeting multiple deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with the Spinal Cord Dysfunction (SCD) Registry and related healthcare systems.
