About the position

Wayfair is seeking a Software Data Engineering Manager to lead the development of a data engineering team in India. This role is pivotal in establishing a robust data architecture and solution roadmap that supports the search and recommendations functional areas of our platform. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and growing the Data Engineering team from the ground up, ensuring that the team is equipped to deliver high-quality data solutions that drive value for our customers and suppliers. The position requires a strategic mindset to develop a multi-year technology and organizational strategy that aligns with Wayfair's goals. In this role, you will architect the data lake, design data pipelines, and implement reporting and dashboarding solutions. You will oversee the entire lifecycle of our petabyte-scale datasets, ensuring they are generated, consumed, and maintained effectively. Keeping abreast of the latest trends in big data and data visualization technologies will be essential, as you will evaluate and recommend technologies that enhance our data capabilities. Additionally, you will manage and mentor team members, fostering an environment of growth and learning while ensuring that ambitious goals are met. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering, with significant experience in leading data architecture projects and managing teams. You will be expected to implement best practices in analytics engineering and govern data security and compliance. Strong leadership skills, excellent communication abilities, and a collaborative approach to working with cross-functional teams are critical for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Build and grow Data Engineering team presence in India from scratch.
  • Develop and drive a multi-year technology and organizational strategy for the Data Engineering team.
  • Define and develop the data architecture and data solution roadmap for search and recommendations functional areas.
  • Architect the data lake, data pipelines, reporting, dashboarding, and data exploration processes.
  • Own the entire search and recommendations petabyte scale dataset, from generation to consumption.
  • Stay current on big data and data visualization technology trends, evaluating and recommending technologies.
  • Manage and mentor associates, ensuring team members are challenged and learning while delivering on goals.
  • Develop a technical center of excellence through training, mentorship, and process innovation.
  • Architect and implement a monitoring and alerting approach for Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs).

Requirements

  • Bachelor/Master degree in Computer Science or related technical subject area.
  • Minimum 10+ years of professional hands-on experience in data engineering, data science, or a similar role.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of people management experience.
  • Significant experience leading data architecture projects and driving decisions related to cloud data platforms and big-data pipelines.
  • Strong knowledge of batch and streaming systems, workflow orchestration, monitoring, and testing (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Airflow, Kafka).
  • Experience in data modeling for traditional relational databases, data warehouses, and data lakes.
  • Experience with developing data architectures to support machine learning and data science needs.
  • Strong familiarity with analytics engineering best practices.
  • Strong experience with governing data security and compliance.
  • Proactively own multiple responsibilities - technology, practices, people, etc.
  • Strong leadership skills necessary to manage and develop a team.
  • Solid experience in Agile/Lean practices and working closely with product management.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, strong business acumen, critical thinking, and ability to work cross-functionally.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience architecting data solutions utilizing BI tools like Looker, Tableau, AtScale, PowerBI, DataStudio, or similar tools.
  • Experience in eCommerce.
