About the position

The Junior Software Developer position is responsible for developing and maintaining software applications under general supervision. The role involves performing routine analysis, testing, and related work to support the Department of Education's technology infrastructure. This entry-level position is designed for individuals who are beginning their careers in software development and offers opportunities to work independently or as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software applications according to design specifications.
  • Perform routine analysis and testing of software applications.
  • Interact with computers and computer systems to program and write software.
  • Code database scripts and stored procedures for data retrieval and manipulation.
  • Modify software to address unexpected processes identified during testing or user feedback.
  • Design databases and data tables based on approved standards.
  • Document design specifications, test plans, and program documentation.
  • Troubleshoot operational or software problems and recommend solutions.
  • Participate in training sessions regarding system functionality and error resolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field.
  • One year of professional experience in systems analysis, application design, or software development.
  • Experience as an Information Systems Associate may substitute for required experience.
  • Graduate coursework in software development may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with programming languages and software development tools.
  • Familiarity with data structures and testing techniques.
  • Knowledge of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
