About the position

Amazon is seeking an experienced Software Development Manager (SDM) to lead a team focused on the core components of Amazon Linux. This role involves managing a team of engineers, overseeing the development and maintenance of essential software components, and collaborating with internal teams and the Open Source community. The SDM will have a strategic impact on the business by translating customer requirements into actionable project plans and ensuring the successful execution of these plans.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of highly skilled developers in the Amazon Linux Core Engineering team.
• Develop and maintain key components of Amazon Linux, including base libraries, core utilities, and language runtimes.
• Supervise and support internal customers in their use of Amazon Linux.
• Translate customer requirements into project and engineering plans with realistic schedules.
• Represent the team in meetings to report on progress and update project plans as necessary.
• Evolve the team's software engineering methods and implement best practices.
• Contribute to the organization's hiring efforts to grow the team.

Requirements

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience.
• 8+ years of engineering experience.
• Experience in communicating with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements and describe software product features.
• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and managing Software Engineers.
• Knowledge of OS internals and software development on Linux, including the POSIX standard, build systems, packaging, and utilities.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or equivalent.
• Proven contributions to upstream open source projects, preferably at the system level.
