In this role, you will manage a critical service that the AWS Field uses to deliver hands-on engagements to AWS Customers and Partners in a scalable and secure manner. The demand for this service is consistently growing, which presents the chance to manage an increasing scope and expand your team over time based on the service and business needs. Our team is responsible for services utilized by thousands of AWS Solutions Architects (SAs) to work efficiently and securely with hundreds of thousands of customers. We are seeking a Software Development Manager to lead a team of engineers focused on the content and event management/delivery aspects of the service. The ideal candidate is passionate about owning large-scale services that prioritize customer satisfaction through high-quality, highly usable, and always-on services. You thrive when leading empowered, highly capable engineers to deliver exceptional customer experiences. You are dedicated to growing your team to meet new challenges and collaborating with other AWS Service teams to tackle large, complex problems. As a Software Development Manager, you will work closely with a diverse and talented team of engineers and product managers to ideate, build, operate, and scale impactful customer-facing features throughout the entire product development lifecycle. You will leverage your experience and unique skills to foster the individual careers of engineers and deliver impactful projects to our customers. You will collaborate with various teams across AWS to uphold the highest standards for safety and security while experiencing an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to see them through to completion. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for advocating for customers, a proven track record of delivering large-scale projects on time, and the ability to operate independently and autonomously. You will need to understand complex problems and identify areas where your team should invest to support anticipated growth and future service requirements. Maturity, judgment, communication, negotiation, and influencing skills are essential as you will interact with cross-functional teams worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, mentor, and manage teams of software engineers.
  • Foster career growth and a strong team culture.
  • Interface with the product manager and internal customers to understand requirements, set priorities, and communicate direction and progress.
  • Own the operational health of your team's software.
  • Manage the agile development process and methodology to deliver tech requirements on time and with a high degree of precision and quality.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders in other groups, driving alignment across multiple organizations on shared goals and initiatives.
  • Make long-term organizational design and architectural decisions.
  • Help develop long-term business and technology strategies.
  • Drive improvements in software engineering practices.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of engineering experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness as product software engineers
