About the position

The Reality Lab team at Meta is at the forefront of developing world-class Augmented and Virtual Reality hardware and software, aiming to connect people globally. This position focuses on creating the next generation of speech and audio enhancement algorithms specifically for wearables. The team comprises multi-disciplinary experts in various fields including digital signal processing, machine learning, wireless systems, software architecture, and simulation/modeling. The role involves significant research and development efforts to enhance user experiences through advanced audio technologies. As a Software Engineer - Audio Applied Scientist, you will be responsible for researching, designing, and developing advanced signal processing algorithms that apply to speech and audio. This includes defining and building new algorithms, as well as enhancing existing ones to support human and machine listening experiences on Meta's consumer hardware devices. You will also be tasked with building specialized Machine Learning (ML) models for resource-constrained platforms and exploring innovative paradigms in AI and machine learning for sensor fusion. The position requires hands-on implementation and optimization of algorithms, particularly classical DSP and ML inference engines tailored for specific chipsets. You will contribute to the roadmap planning for the next generation of platforms and collaborate with researchers and applied scientists across multiple disciplines. Additionally, you will work closely with User Experience Research teams to design experiments and analyze data effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and develop advanced signal processing algorithms with application to speech and audio.
  • Define and build new algorithms and enhance existing algorithms to support human and machine listening experiences.
  • Build specialized Machine Learning (ML) models for resource-constrained platforms.
  • Explore new paradigms in AI and machine learning for sensor fusion.
  • Implement and optimize algorithms for classical DSP and ML inference engines for specific chipsets.
  • Contribute to roadmap planning for the next generation of platforms.
  • Collaborate with researchers and applied scientists from multiple disciplines.
  • Work with User Experience Research in designing experiments and analyzing data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing.
  • 7+ years of software development experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in DSP and audio algorithm development.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and experience working across disciplines to drive optimal solutions.
  • Experience with C or C++ and scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or similar.
  • Experience in areas such as Small footprint ML, Differential DSP, Echo/Noise reduction, and Spatial Processing.
  • Experience with custom or commercially available DSP development frameworks.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Expertise in audio signal processing using both classical and machine learning techniques.
  • Proven track record of innovation demonstrated by products shipped, publications, and/or patents.
  • Proven track record of contribution in areas such as Auditory perception, Near and Far field spatial processing, Adaptive System Identification, Multirate systems and filter banks, and Speech and audio compression.
