About the position

Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer II to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. This position is pivotal in completing advanced end-to-end engineering tasks for specific system assignments. The individual will be responsible for designing, developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing solutions based on user or system specifications. This role involves consulting with users to determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications, managing interactions between systems and other technical support areas, and defining technical requirements while coordinating team resources to solve problems. In this role, you will perform analysis, design, development, and configuration functions with a high degree of accuracy and speed, operating as an individual contributor to team goals. You will also be tasked with performing analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of advanced complexity, escalating issues appropriately. The ideal candidate will work independently to tackle well-scoped and loosely scoped problems, seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities, and provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced employees. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. The position requires a strong desire to solve problems through hypothesis development and experimentation, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and growth in your career. You will be expected to demonstrate intermediate delivery skills, domain expertise, strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and intermediate leadership skills to help create a safe environment for others to learn and grow as engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis, design, development, and configuration functions with a high degree of accuracy and speed.
  • Perform analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of advanced complexity and escalate appropriately.
  • Work independently to tackle well-scoped and loosely scoped problems.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in work experience.
  • Two years of programming/development experience.
  • Four years of programming/development experience preferred.
  • Four years of DevOps/Site Reliability experience preferred.
  • Experience with shell/bash scripting, Linux, and/or building/deploying applications using CI tools or Pipelines.
  • Experience with application performance monitoring tools like Dynatrace/App D/Grafana/Influx stack or ELK stack.
  • Experience developing, operating, and tuning systems with high-availability and high-throughput.
  • General understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, and firewalls.
  • Desire to solve problems by developing a hypothesis and proving or disproving it through experiments and perseverance.
  • Desire to be mentored and to mentor other team members.
  • Desire to continuously learn and grow in your career.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with one or more programming languages is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud services like AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure is a plus.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with tools like Terraform is a plus.
  • Experience with one or more of Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes is a plus.
  • Experience with both relational and NoSQL databases is a plus.
