About the position

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Software Engineer specializing in Machine Learning, particularly in the deployment of large language models (LLMs). This role is crucial for supporting data management and lifecycle management of LLM assistants across SLAC's scientific facilities. The position involves collaboration with scientists, engineers, and academic partners, contributing to SLAC's mission in photon science, accelerator physics, and energy sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Work with multiple domain science teams to prepare multimodal datasets from logbooks, wikis, scientific manuals, papers, etc.
  • Implement LLM pipelines based on open-source models, including knowledge of RAGs and knowledge graphs.
  • Oversee deployment of LLM applications for SLAC's scientific facilities.
  • Engage with researchers at SLAC and Stanford to incorporate novel LLM methodologies into active deployments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, or related fields.
  • At least two years of experience in large language model deployment and machine learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex technical concepts.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and collaborate across organizations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated experience in LLM deployment.
  • Master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of data analysis experience with scientific data.
  • 1+ year experience working at a DOE laboratory.
