About the position

Canonical is seeking a passionate Software Engineer to optimize Ubuntu Server for public clouds. This role involves collaborating with a distributed team to enhance the Ubuntu platform, which is widely used in public cloud environments. The engineer will be responsible for writing high-quality code, debugging issues, and contributing to the planning and maintenance of Ubuntu Server packages. This position offers the opportunity to work with leading technology professionals and engage in meaningful projects that impact the global enterprise market.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
  • Write high quality code to create new features
  • Debug issues and produce high quality code to fix them
  • Review code produced by other engineers
  • Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
  • Assist in the maintenance of Ubuntu Server packages
  • Become involved in the planning of new Ubuntu features
  • Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu and Debian communities
  • Work with partners to enhance the Ubuntu experience in the cloud

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
  • Experience with Ubuntu Linux - kernel or userspace
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, OpenStack, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and Go
  • Experience with Debian packaging
  • Knowledge of public cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, Azure, Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud
  • Interest in traditional server workloads, virtualization, containers, and package management

Nice-to-haves

  • Involvement in open source projects
  • Experience with cloud agents for major public clouds
  • Ability to frequently switch projects and learn about a wide range of technologies
