About the position

Canonical is seeking a passionate Software Engineer to optimize Ubuntu Server for public clouds. This role involves collaborating with a distributed team to enhance the Ubuntu platform, which is widely used in public cloud environments. The engineer will be responsible for writing high-quality code, debugging issues, and maintaining server packages, while also engaging with the open-source community and partners to improve the cloud experience.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
• Write high quality code to create new features
• Debug issues and produce high quality code to fix them
• Review code produced by other engineers
• Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
• Assist in the maintenance of Ubuntu Server packages
• Become involved in the planning of new Ubuntu features
• Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu and Debian communities
• Work with partners to enhance the Ubuntu experience in the cloud

Requirements

• Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
• Interest and experience with Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Python, Go, Debian packaging, AWS, GCP, Azure, Oracle Cloud, or IBM Cloud
• Ability to switch projects frequently and learn about a wide range of technologies
• Experience in open source projects is a plus

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with cloud agents for major public clouds
• Familiarity with traditional server workloads such as web servers, databases, and network services
• Knowledge of virtualization and container technologies
