About the position

As a Software Engineering Manager at Google, you will play a pivotal role in leading a team of engineers while also providing technical leadership on major projects. Your responsibilities will extend beyond just overseeing code optimization; you will ensure that your team is equipped to optimize their own work effectively. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and managerial skills, as you will be responsible for managing project goals, contributing to product strategy, and fostering the development of your team members. The role involves collaboration across various teams within the company, focusing on areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, and user interface design. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will guide engineers across multiple teams and locations, manage a substantial product budget, and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects internationally. Google Play Services, which you will be a part of, provides essential system services on Android, enabling features like location services, digital car keys, and more. The Google Play team enhances the Android ecosystem by offering developers and partners a premium platform to reach millions of users. Your leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of these services and ensuring that they meet the evolving needs of users and developers alike.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals.
  • Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals.
  • Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
  • Develop the mid-term technical idea and roadmap, and evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Design, guide, and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
  • 3 years of experience in Android development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience working on Android internals, frameworks, and apps.
  • 3 years of experience working in an evolving organization.
