About the position

As a Software Engineering Manager at Google, you will play a pivotal role in leading a team of engineers while also contributing to the technical direction of major projects. Your responsibilities will extend beyond mere management; you will be expected to provide technical leadership and ensure that your team is equipped to optimize their code effectively. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and managerial skills, as you will oversee project goals, contribute to product strategy, and help develop your team’s capabilities. The role involves managing engineers across multiple teams and locations, handling a significant product budget, and overseeing the deployment of large-scale projects internationally. You will be part of the Android and Mobile team, working on Google Play services, which powers essential features on Android devices, including location services, digital car keys, and more. Your team will be responsible for engineering backend systems, shaping product strategy, and forming partnerships that enhance the Android ecosystem. This is a dynamic environment where you will guide your team in delivering innovative solutions that reach millions of users. In this role, you will also be responsible for setting and communicating team priorities that align with the broader organizational goals. You will establish clear expectations for your team members, conduct regular performance discussions, and provide coaching to foster their development. Additionally, you will be involved in developing mid-term technical ideas and roadmaps, ensuring that your team is prepared to meet evolving requirements and infrastructure needs. Your technical acumen will be crucial as you design, guide, and vet system designs, and review code to uphold best practices in software development.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals.
  • Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals.
  • Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
  • Develop the mid-term technical idea and roadmap, and evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Design, guide, and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
  • 3 years of experience in Android development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience working on Android internals, frameworks, and apps.
  • 3 years of experience working in an evolving organization.
